Running "make" on BSD to compile a tarball gives weird errors

  • After downloading and untar'ing a piece of software and running "make" to compile it, it fails with unexpected error messages similar to these:

    # make
    "server/Rules.mk", line 53: Need an operator
    "language/Rules.mk", line 42: Need an operator
    Error expanding embedded variable.

  • Try using "gmake" instead of "make"
